Nicola sturgeon announcement today - First Minister to speak as vaccine is approved in UK

Nicola Sturgeon will speak from Edinburgh today in her latest update after news that a Covid vaccine had been approved for use in the UK.

The Pfizer AstraZeneca vaccine again the coronavirus has been approved by the UK medicines regulator for use in the UK, and Nicola Sturgeon is likely to address the progress in her daily briefing.

The First Minister has already said the NHS and Scottish Government are ready to roll out the first doses of the vaccine as soon as they arrive.

UK health minister Matt Hancock told the BBC this morning that the UK have around 800,000 doses in the first instance, with million more expected before the end of the year.

It is expected that the UK wide vaccine stock will be distributed to the nations across the UK on a population share basis.

The priority of those who will be vaccinated is set by an independent panel of experts, and the first priority will be those over 80 as well as health and social care workers.

The First Minister will speak live from Edinburgh from around 12:15pm. She will be joined by chief medical officer Dr Gregor Smith. As well as her latest Covid stats update, Ms Sturgeon is likely to address the news of vaccine approval and the logistics planning in place for delivery in Scotland.
