Nicola Sturgeon update: No level change for three weeks as 2,167 Covid cases confirmed

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that a move down a level for Scotland will not take place for a further three weeks.

The First Minister spoke in parliament on Tuesday to announce a coronavirus levels review, where she stated the country would remain in its current levels for now.

This had been considered last week by the Scottish Government, however a final decision was made on Tuesday morning.

The pause came as 2,167 new positive cases of Covid-19 were reported over the last 24 hours, giving a positivity rate of 9.8 per cent.

Data has shown that Tuesday's figure is the highest since January, with four further deaths also registered.

12 more people are now in hospital, with an additional three people also in intensive care around the country.

However, 3,664,571 people have received a first dose of the vaccine, with 2,602,753 now also having had a second.

Speaking in parliament, the FM stated that the easing of restrictions must be in balance with the roll-out of vaccinations to protect against the virus.

She said: "At the moment, the high number of new Covid cases being recorded is a significant consideration. To use the race analogy, we must not allow the virus to get too far ahead of the vaccines.

"Therefore, as indicated last week, we intend to maintain the current restrictions applicable in each part of Scotland for the next three weeks.

"Within those levels, though, we will make some minor, but important, changes to the rules on weddings and funerals. These will take effect from Monday 28 June."

The First Minister also explained that the move to level 0, although delayed, should take place on July 19.
