Nicola Sturgeon update: 71 new coronavirus deaths recorded in Scotland

A further 71 people have died from coronavirus in Scotland, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon sets out the results of a government review of the current national lockdown measures, including the closure of schools.

1,165 new cases of the virus were reported, which represented 11.1 per cent of new tests.

1,989 people are receiving treatment in NHS Scotland hospitals for the virus, up from 1,959 on Monday.

150, up four on the figure reported on Monday by Nicola Sturgeon.

A positivity rate of 11.1 is more than double the target of five per cent which the World Health Organisation has set to demonstrate the pandemic is under control in a country.

284,582 people have received their first dose of the coronavirus vaccination, whilst 3,886 have received their second dose

71 new deaths means a total of 5,376 have died after testing positive for the virus, whilst 7,704 deaths have been registered in Scotland where Covid was mentioned on the death certificate up to 10 January.

The government stats also revealed in the week ending 15 January, 1,148 Covid patients were admitted to hospital.
