Nicola Sturgeon tried to block Kate Middleton and Prince William's Scotland trip

Nicola Sturgeon tried to block Kate Middleton and Prince William's trip to Scotland, citing coronavirus lockdown rules.

Scotland's First Minister today said the the Scottish Government advised the couple about the restrictions when they were told about the planned trip.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are currently travelling around the UK on a three-day tour to thank communities for their efforts during the pandemic.

Under current Scottish regulations, it is illegal to travel between England and Scotland unless you have a reasonable excuse.

Mrs Sturgeon took a snipe at Kate and William as she made clear the trip breached travel rules during a briefing today.

Refusing to be drawn on the trip, she said: “The Scottish Government was advised about the intention to visit, and we made sure that the Royal Household were aware, as you would expect, of the restrictions in place in Scotland so that could inform both the decision and the planning of the visit.

“Any more questions on that should be directed to the Royal household.”

She was also asked whether the trip would help boost morale, but made no reference to this question in her response.

There are exceptions to Scotland's cross-border travel ban, including travel for work or to provide voluntary or charitable services, but only when this cannot be done from home.

During the 1,250-mile trip, the Cambridges will talk to dozens of front-line workers, volunteers, care home staff, teachers, schoolkids and young people about their pandemic experiences.

A royal source told Mirror Online the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are exempt from the cross-border travel ban as their trip is for work purposes.

They added that the tour was organised in conjunction with the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments.
