Nicola Sturgeon to review Scotland's lockdown restrictions today

Scotland's lockdown restrictions will be reviewed today followed by an announcement at parliament.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will meet with her Cabinet this morning to discuss the latest advice and infection rates ahead of her update at 2pm.

She is expected to make a statement on lockdown being extended beyond the end of January and the schools closure policy, though she has indicated classrooms are unlikely to reopen in early February.

Speaking at her lunchtime briefing yesterday, she said: "At tomorrow's Cabinet meeting we will look at all the latest data and come to a view on where we are and whether we need to extend lockdown restrictions to help us further suppress the virus."

All of mainland Scotland is currently under strict level four lockdown, with classrooms closed to all but the most vulnerable children and those of key workers.

Ms Sturgeon also confirmed a further 1,429 new positive coronavirus tests in 24 hours, representing 12.3 per cent of those carried out. Of the new cases, 451 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 244 in Lanarkshire.

No further deaths were reported, although that's not unexpected following a weekend when registry offices are generally closed.
