Nicola Sturgeon to meet Boris Johnson for rescheduled summit on covid recovery

Nicola Sturgeon will speak with Prime Minister Boris Johnson today at a virtual summit on the UK's recovery from coronavirus.

The First Minister will be joined by other leaders of devolved administrations to discuss how they can work together to recover from the devastating pandemic.

The rescheduled meeting comes a week after a summit was scrapped at the last minute following a row between the Scottish, Welsh and UK governments.

Welsh FM Mark Drakeford and Sturgeon wrote to Johnson stating they wanted a clearer agenda and to make sure it wasn't more than a PR exercise.

Following the cancellation all sides blamed one another for the breakdown of potential talks.

Boris Johnson, Nicola Sturgeon, Mark Drakeford and Arlene Foster will now meet virtually this afternoon.

Alongside the heads of governments their deputies will also be present while the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Rishi Sunak), the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Michael Gove) and the Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland (Brandon Lewis), Scotland (Alister Jack) and Wales (Simon Hart) will attend from the UK Government.

It's expected Johnson will propose closer working and cooperation as the UK attempts to recover from the pandemic.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Michael Gove, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: " I am delighted that the leaders of the devolved administrations all responded positively to the Prime Minister’s invitation to join this important meeting on COVID recovery.

"Throughout the pandemic, we have worked together to stop the spread of the virus and to roll out lifesaving vaccines. Our joint success has shown the world what we can achieve as a United Kingdom.

" We must take the same approach to the difficult challenge of rebuilding our economy and public services from the damaging impact of COVID 19. It will not be a quick or easy job, but we will all do better if we face the challenge together."
