Nicola Sturgeon to make covid update as Glasgow set to remain at Level 3 of lockdown

Nicola Sturgeon will today host her first media briefing on covid in over a week as at least one Scottish council area faces tougher restrictions.

The First Minister is expected to confirm that East Renfrewshire will be placed at Level 3 of lockdown despite having only been placed at Level 2 from Monday.

It means dozens of businesses will need to either close or alter their trading to comply with tougher rules.

Glasgow is expected to remain at Level 3 with cases in the city suggesting it could be weeks before restrictions can be eased safely.

It follows a spike in the number of people testing positive for coronavirus, with the outbreak centred around the Pollokshields district in Glasgow's southside.

Much of East Renfrewshire forms a continuous urban area with Glasgow, meaning the virus could quickly spread between households.

The suburban council area yesterday overtook Glasgow as Scotland's covid hotspot today as cases of the virus continued to rise.

The local authority area to the south-west of the city now has a case rate of 118.3 per 100,000 people, while the case rate in Glasgow now stands at 112.1.

The covid case rate is a key indicator of which restriction level an area should be in, with upwards of 50 cases per 100,000 seen as the threshold for level three.

Vaccinations have been stepped up across the area to the south of the Clyde, with people in their 20s and 30s being offered their first jab.

But there is expected to be good news for residents in Moray. The local authority area in the north-east of Scotland has seen its covid spike tail off, with case numbers dropping, and should be able to move up to Level 2 from next week.
