John Swinney to make covid statement on rising cases in some areas of Scotland

John Swinney is set to make a statement in the Scottish Parliament later today on the worrying covid situation in Glasgow and the surrounding area.

The Deputy First Minister will answer an urgent question from new Scottish Conservative MSP Sandesh Gulhane on the rising cases in Scotland's largest city. He is also expected to give a wider update on the situation across Scotland.

Glasgow, along with Moray, was held in Level Three lockdown on Monday as the rest of the mainland moved down to Level Two and the island communities to Level One.

Cases have been on the rise in some parts of the south side of the city which led to the decision by the Scottish Government on Friday.

Gulhane is expected to say: "To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on rising COVID-19 cases in Glasgow and parts of the Greater Glasgow area."

Cases in East Renfrewshire have also risen over the last couple of days.

Swinney said yesterday in a radio interview that the situation on the outskirts of Glasgow was being "monitored" by the government.

Testing and vaccine programmes have been ramped up across the affected areas in Glasgow as authorities look to stop the rise in cases.

Scotland's national clinical director has stressed the importance of finding those in Glasgow who missed their first vaccine appointment amid a coronavirus outbreak in the city.

Professor Jason Leitch said that even though this was only around 10% to 15% of the population, it was still a "significant number of people".
