Nicola Sturgeon to make covid statement as Scottish Government unveils new framework

Nicola Sturgeon will today announce details of the Scottish Government's new covid framework for dealing with the pandemic.

The First Minister will update MSPs on how the country will respond to any future spike in covid cases caused by the emergence of new variants.

The SNP leader is also expected to explain whether or not the vaccination passport scheme will continue after it was ditched in England and Wales.

The number of reported covid cases across the UK has dropped sharply in recent weeks meaning the end of almost all restrictions.

But SNP ministers have so far failed to encourage workers to return to offices on a full-time basis or give a date for when face coverings will no longer be mandatory in public places.

Sturgeon is also expected to explain whether the Scottish Government will continue funding free lateral flow tests as the UK Government signals it intends to wind-down the mass testing regime.

Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour health spokeswoman, said: "The progress that we are making against the virus is very welcome, but we must remember that this virus has not gone away and we must all remain vigilant to the threat it poses.

"When the people of Scotland most need co-operation between both of Scotland’s governments, we are faced with the prospect of them taking opposing positions on the easing of restrictions.

"Both governments must make decisions that are grounded in science and in the real world.

"If the UK government does not continue testing, then the Scottish Government must consider doing so in order to help contain the spread of the virus.

"The people of Scotland deserve co-operative government that puts their wellbeing before all else."

Sandesh Gulhane, the Scottish Conservatives health spokesman, said: "Nicola Sturgeon has often been too quick to introduce restrictions and too cautious when it comes to lifting them.

"We need to see a bold, strategic plan from her to get the country back on its feet and as close to normality as possible."
