Nicola Sturgeon to make Covid lockdown announcement today as cases surge

The First Minister is expected to give a lockdown update and announce if the Scottish Government will be easing any of the current coronavirus restrictions today.

The Scottish government had previously hoped to move Scotland to level zero of coronavirus restrictions by June 28, but with a surge in recent cases, there is speculation that they could put any changes on hold.

It comes as Boris Johnson extended England’s Covid lockdown by another four weeks amid a rise in coronavirus infections and hospitalisations.

Scottish Health Secretary Humza Yousaf warned that there is concern over the new Delta Variant, saying that we are “at the very, very early days of a potential third wave”.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Show, Mr Yousaf warned that “there’s no doubt at all that the Delta variant is absolutely a bump in the road."

He added: “We have to just ensure that we understand fully the effects and link between the rising number of cases and hospitalisations and that is the key critical question”.

He later said: “We have taken a cautious approach - we have always been led by the public health data."

There were 6,250 new cases of coronavirus recorded in Scotland in the seven days to June 11 according to Public Health Scotland.

This is the equivalent of 114.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Scotland now has the highest rate among the four nations of the UK.

Nicola Sturgeon is due to speak at 2.15pm today.
