Nicola Sturgeon to hold covid briefing today as restrictions set to ease across parts of Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon will hold a coronavirus briefing later today as Scotland is set to ease lockdown restrictions.

The First Minister will be joined by National Clinical Director Jason Leitch from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh.

The SNP leader is expected to give an update of the overall situation regarding the virus in Scotland then take questions from journalists.

Cases across parts of the country have jumped over the last week mainly due to the spread of the so-called Indian variant.

Glasgow has been hit hardest by the new strain and is due to move out of Level 3 at midnight tonight, while several other local authorities in the central belt and Dundee will remain at Level 2.

Some parts of the north, north east and in the south of Scotland will shift to Level 1, while the Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles will move to Level 0.

Testing and the vaccination programme has been ramped up in some parts of the Glasgow in a bid to stop the spread of the virus that has killed more than 7,000 Scots since last March.

It comes as the Scottish Government followed the UK Government in putting Portugal on the Amber list amid growing concerns over coronavirus variants and mutations.

People returning from the holiday hotspot from 4am on June 8 will now have to quarantine for 10 days on return.

On announcing the decision, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said: “Portugal is a popular destination for Scottish holiday makers and this change will clearly cause disruption to people’s travel plans.

“However we have been forthright from the outset that the traffic light system is designed to protect the safety of the people of Scotland and the continued progress we are making as we come out of lockdown.

“Using the stringent methodology of the Joint Biosecurity Centre it is clear the risk this new variant poses is now too great to allow unrestricted travel to Portugal, an approach that has been agreed by all four nations."

What time is the briefing and where can I watch?

Nicola Sturgeon will get to the podium at St Andrew's House in the capital at around 12.15pm.

The Daily Record Facebook page will be showing the briefing live so you will be able to watch.

We will also be live blogging the statement on our blog.
