Nicola Sturgeon to hold covid briefing today as new cases remain high across Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon will hold a covid briefing today to update the country on the latest situation regarding the pandemic.

The First Minister is expected to urge Scots to get vaccinated when they get their appointment and to test regularly to attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

It comes after Sturgeon warned Scots earlier this week that it is "likely" there will be a delay in the lifting of lockdown restrictions across the country.

Rising cases and hospitalisations due to the Delta variant, which originated in India, is the reason for the potential delay.

Testing and the vaccination programmes have been ramped up across Scotland in the last month in a bid to prevent the further spread of the virus that has killed more than 7,600 Scots.

Sturgeon will be joined by National Clinical Director Jason Leitch at the briefing from St Andrews House in Edinburgh which is set to take place at 12.15pm.

Sturgeon tweeted: "There will be a @scotgov Covid briefing at 12.15pm today, giving an update on today’s figures and overall trends, and a reminder of the key steps we all need to take - get vaccinated, test regularly and follow the public health precautions.

"Tune in if you can."

We'll have all the latest from the briefing in our live coronavirus blog.

The Daily Record will also be showing the briefing on our Facebook page so you can watch it there.
