Nicola Sturgeon to give urgent coronavirus update today amid 'areas of concern'

Nicola Sturgeon is to hold a coronavirus briefing this afternoon amid concerns over soaring Covid-19 cases in certain areas of Scotland.

Glasgow is still currently being kept under level three resections, and new Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said that this week will be “critical” for Glasgow’s hopes of seeing the restrictions potentially ease.

Nicola Sturgeon is also likely to address growing concerns over the case rate in Clackmannanshire, which has now overtaken the city of Glasgow os Scotland’s ‘coronavirus hotspot.’

For all the latest coronavirus news please see our live blog here.

As of yesterday, the local authority had a seven-day average rate of 139.7 cases per 100,000 people compared to Glasgow City's 136.8.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf also admitted that Clackmannanshire is now giving the Scottish Government “a bit of concern.”

Speaking on Good Morning Scotland about what we can expect from today’s coronavirus briefing, BBC political corespondent David Wallace Lockhart said that there likely won’t be any changes to restrictions announced today.

He added: “We may get an indication of the Scottish Government’s direction of travel when it comes to certain areas with more concerning rates of Covid.

“Glasgow remains alone in level three restrictions, but there are proportionally high numbers in other council areas such as Clackmannanshire and East Renfrewshire.

“Nicola Sturgeon may also address the vaccine rollout after large numbers of appointments were missed in Glasgow’s biggest vaccine hub over the weekend.”
