Nicola Sturgeon to give special TV address to nation tonight on new Covid rules

Nicola Sturgeon will give a televised announcement tonight, hours after she announced new guidance for Scots ahead of the increased Omicron variant threat.

Sturgeon will appear on BBC One Scotland at 7pm in a speech titled: "A response from the First Minister', lasting just five munutes.

Earlier this afternoon, Sturgeon announced new guidance involving the amount of people gathering within the same indoor space, with the return of the rule of three.

Due to the recent threat of Omicron, the most transmissible variant of Covid-19 yet, a step-up in offering Scots their booster jabs has also been announced, with more vaccination centres set to reopen in various different locations.

The televised speech is expected to relay what was covered during the First Minister's briefing at Holyrood today, in the hope that Scots across the country will tune in and change their festive plans to coincide with the guidance.

Desperate to give people a 'normal' Christmas after last year's lockdown, Sturgeon has reiterated that her plans are not to cancel festive plans, but for people to be considerate and not put lives at risk by organising large indoor gatherings.

Scotland's First Minister also issued an update on the business sector, detailing that in retail, additional measures will be put in place to avoid crowding and bottlenecks.

A reminder of the possibility of table service to avoid people gathering at bars in pubs and restaurants was also issued and Sturgeon also noted that working from home will soon be made mandatory.

From the Scottish government's own resources, £100 million will be available help businesses, mainly those in hospitality and food supply, affected by the advice mentioned last week and what was said today.

For those who need to self isolate and need extra financial support, there is also now an additional £100 million to ensure the Self Isolation Support Grant is available for those who need it.
