Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today as Omicron cases continue to surge

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give an update to the Scottish Parliament on the state of the covid pandemic in Scotland later today.

The First Minister will address members of parliament in a virtual sitting about what measures may be taken to halt the spread of the Omicron variant.

Cases of the deadly virus have shot up in recent days with the highest levels ever being recorded over the New Year period.

Sturgeon has been urged to change the self-isolation rules in Scotland from ten to seven days to get it in line with the rest of the United Kingdom.

During an interview on Tuesday, Deputy First Minister John Swinney hinted that Sturgeon could change the rules in her statement later today.

He said: "We're actively considering the issue of reducing the self isolation period.

"The First Minister confirmed that to p arliament in the virtual session on the 29th of December, and further details will be shared with parliament in its virtual session tomorrow.

"So yes, that issue is under consideration."

What time is the statement?

The SNP leader is expected to get to her feet at around 2pm on Wednesday, January 5.

Sturgeon is expected to make a statement for about 20 minutes in a virtual session of the Scottish Parliament.

MSPs will then question the First Minister on her statement for around 55 minutes.

Where can I watch the statement?

The statement by Nicola Sturgeon will be streamed on the Daily Record's main Facebook page which can be viewed here.

The Scottish Parliament website will have a stream of the speech as will its Facebook.
