Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today as new restrictions in Scotland 'inevitable'

Nicola Sturgeon will deliver a coronavirus statement in the Scottish Parliament today on how the country must tackle the rapidly spreading Omicron variant of coronavirus.

The First Minister will address MSPs this afternoon with all indicators suggesting she will announce new restrictions.

Sturgeon warned at a media briefing last week that Scotland faced the possibility of a "tsunami of infections" as the more transmissible Omicron variant replaces Delta as the dominant strain.

Ministers have already pledged to ramp up the vaccine booster programme with more details expected to be announced today.

All Scots aged 30-39 are now able to book their third dose of the vaccine with 18 to 29-year-olds expected to be granted permission later this week.

Yesterday, Health Secretary Humza Yousaf announced that changes to covid restrictions in Scotland are "inevitable".

Asked on the BBC's Good Morning Scotland programme if the nation should brace for new measures to tackle the spread of Omicron, Yousaf replied: "I think it's inevitable we will announce additional protective measures.

"I would be reluctant to get into detail on that because we're working through that detail.

"The First Minister will rightly update parliament first tomorrow.

"It is really important that we try to do this with as much support from the Treasury which hasn't been forthcoming thus far, because we know that of course there's been an impact on businesses.

"We are looking at preventative measures again, and the First Minister will announce detail of that tomorrow."

Here's all you need to know about the statement:

What time is the update?

The First Minister is expected to get to her feet in the Chamber at around 2.05pm.

Sturgeon will speak for around 20 minutes before taking questions from MSPs about the measures that will be imposed for about 70 minutes.

Where can I watch?

The statement will be broadcast on the Scottish Parliament TV channel, it can be viewed here.

It can also be viewed on the Scottish Parliament official Facebook page.

The Daily Record will also show the update from Sturgeon on our main Facebook page.

If you're out and about or sitting at your desk then it can be followed on our live covid blog.

BBC One Scotland will air a dedicated show for the announced as well. It starts at 2pm.
