Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today as fears grow over new restrictions before Christmas

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give an update on the state of the coronavirus in Scotland later today.

The First Minister will address MSPs in the Scottish Parliament on any potential new restrictions that could be implemented due to fears over the spread of the Omicron variant.

New guidance was issued at the end of last week for hospitality and retail outlets, while Scots were urged to curb their social mixing due to the risk of contracting and spreading the virus.

The Scottish Government has been given more money by the UK Treasury to help deal with the pandemic.

Sturgeon had been demanding additional funding for the hospitality industry which would allow her to impose stricter restrictions on social gatherings in Scotland.

On Sunday evening the Treasury announced it was doubling the covid funding to £440 million on top of their Autumn Budget 2021 funding.

Here's all you need to know about the statement:

What time does it start?

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to get to her feet in the Holyrood Chamber at around 2.20pm.

The First Minister will speak for around 20 minutes before taking questions from MSPs, including opposition leaders Douglas Ross, Anas Sarwar and Alex Cole-Hamilton, about the measures that will be imposed for about 40 minutes.

Where can I watch?

The last scheduled covid statement in the Scottish Parliament before Christmas will be broadcast on the Scottish Parliament TV channel, it can be viewed here.

It can also be viewed on the Scottish Parliament official Facebook page.

The Daily Record will also show the update from Sturgeon on our main Facebook page.

If you're out and about or sitting at your desk then it can be followed on our live covid blog.

BBC One Scotland will air a dedicated show for the announced as well. It starts at 2.15pm.
