Nicola Sturgeon to give covid update today as cases reach record levels

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give an update on the state of the coronavirus pandemic in Scotland later today.

The First Minister will address MSPs in a virtual sitting of the Scottish Parliament about what measures may be taken to halt the spread of the Omicron variant.

Cases of the deadly virus have shot up in recent days with the highest levels ever being recorded over the Christmas period.

Professor Jason Leitch revealed on Tuesday that cases may not peak in Scotland until "mid to late January".

He said: "The modelling suggests that the peak of the Omicron wave in the United Kingdom will be somewhere around mid to late January, maybe even pushing into February.

"That will depend quite a lot on human behaviour. That will depend on what we do now."
