Nicola Sturgeon to give coronavirus update on lockdown easing in Scotland

Nicola Sturgeon is set to give the nation an update on the coronavirus pandemic at a briefing later today.

The First Minister will be joined by Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith from St Andrew's House as they provide details on planned easing of restrictions across the country.

It will be the first covid announcement the SNP leader has held since last Tuesday where she confirmed that Scottish school children would head back to the classroom following the Easter break.

Briefings have been curtailed over the l ast couple of months due to the Scottish Parliament election campaign.

Sturgeon will give an update on the state of the pandemic in Scotland then take questions, as usual, from journalists.

The briefing will get underway at noon and will be live on the Daily Record Facebook page and on BBC One Scotland.

Scotland is slowly easing out of the national lockdown with the 'stay at home' restriction lifted at the start of this month.

Just last wee garden centres, hairdressers and homeware stores, car showrooms and forecourts were able to open for the first time in months.

There will be a further easing on April 26 when Scotland returns to the levels system.

Hospitality venues will be able to serve people outdoors in groups of six from three households until 10pm, with alcohol permitted.

Yesterday it was announced that no one had died in that last 24 hours from covid, however there were 199 new cases identified.
