Nicola Sturgeon to face union chiefs over renewable energy jobs broken promises

Union leaders will confront Nicola Sturgeon today over broken SNP promises to create tens of thousands of renewable energy jobs.

The First Minister will be put on the spot when she visits the STUC congress in Dundee.

A report from the trade union umbrella group points out the Scottish Government’s 2010 Low Carbon Strategy predicted the sector would boast 130,000 jobs in Scotland by 2020.

But official figures show there were only 21,400 direct jobs in renewables in 2017 and a further 25,000 indirect jobs.

The report, Broken Promises and Offshored Jobs, states: “Past predictions of employment in the low carbon and renewables energy (LCRE) economy haven’t translated into the jobs boom promised.

“The LCRE economy is characterised by overseas financial interests, a limited industrial base and precarious work.

“This is a failure of industrial policy that means workers, businesses and Government in Scotland do not benefit from Scotland’s natural resources.”

The report says projects such as Moray East Wind Farm and the KOWL contract illustrate this failure.

STUC general secretary Grahame Smith said: “Commitments to new jobs and policy reforms have failed to materialise time and time again.”

The Scottish Government said it is committed to “maximising the economic opportunity of the transition to a low-carbon economy”.

A spokeswoman added: “Finance Secretary Derek Mackay will co-host a summit in May with UK Energy Minister Claire Perry, which will bring together trade unions, offshore wind developers, supply chain companies and Government to look at how UK companies can benefit more.”

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said: “Renewable energy should provide a jobs dividend to our manufacturing base, not yards in Europe and factories in the Middle and Far East.”
