Nicola Sturgeon to face questions on Covid-19 lockdown plan at Scottish Parliament committee

Nicola Sturgeon will face questions today on her decision to adopt a new five-tier lockdown framework for Scotland.

The First Minister will appear before Holyrood's Covid-19 committee, with members expected to quiz the SNP leader on how easily council areas will be able to move from one level to another.

Each of the country's 32 local authorities was placed in one of five different levels of lockdown last week under the Scottish Government's latest strategy for reducing the spread of coronavirus.

More than 70% of the population is currently living under level three - meaning schools and non-essential shops remain open, but hospitality businesses face significant restrictions.

But Sturgeon warned yesterday that some parts of Scotland could be moved to level four when the framework is reviewed next week.

That could see non-essential shops and hairdressers forced to close as part of a return to a system of lockdown first introduced in March.

A Scottish Government review of lockdown levels will be made next Tuesday.

Covid committee convener Donald Cameron said: “MSPs are going to have an important job reviewing and scrutinising the proposed changes to local authority tiers.

“To do this, it is crucial we have clarity on the thinking of the Scottish Government, and can challenge that where appropriate.

“We look forward to having a robust exchange of views with the First Minister on how the system will operate.”
