Nicola Sturgeon to deliver covid update to parliament as cases reach record high

Nicola Sturgeon is to give a covid update to MSPs this week after cases soared to a record high over the New Year.

Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone has confirmed that the First Minister will address parliament during a virtual sitting on Wednesday.

She will give a 20-minute statement on the latest figures and announce whether any new measures will be introduced to curb the spread of covid.

It comes after 20,217 new cases were reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours - the highest daily rate since the pandemic began.

The PO posted on Twitter: "CONFIRMED: Parliament will sit at 2pm on Wednesday 5 January.

"The meeting – for an update and questions on COVID – will be entirely virtual."

Figures published today show 34.9 per cent of 65,860 new tests were positive.

Monday's figures report 1,031 people in hospital on Sunday with recently confirmed covid, with 38 in intensive care.

A total of 4,383,212 people have received their first dose of a covid vaccination, 4,017,051 have received their second dose, and 2,992,583 have received a third dose or booster.

The daily data for January 1 and January 2 was also published on Monday.

A total of 17,065 new cases were reported on January 1 and 14,080 were reported for January 2.

Public Health Scotland has acknowledged delays in between tests being taken and results being reported but said it is monitoring the situation.

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to take part in the virtual parliament at around 2pm on Wednesday, January 5.

The SNP leader will speak for around 20 minutes then take questions from MSPs for about 55 minutes.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar will have the opportunity to quiz the First Minister on her statement.

Backbench MSPs will also get the chance to ask Sturgeon questions on behalf of their constituents.
