Nicola Sturgeon to be officially sworn in as First Minister in Scottish Parliament

Nicola Sturgeon will be officially sworn in as First Minister of Scotland in the parliament later today.

The SNP leader is expected to be selected by the parliament during a session in the Holyrood chamber on Tuesday, May 18.

A nomination period will open at 9.30 and close at 1.30pm where any member of the Scottish Parliament may be nominated, however they must be seconded by another MSP who has already been sworn in.

The selection of the First Minister of Scotland is expected to take place at around 2pm inside the chamber.

The Scotland Act 1998 states the election for the nomination of the First Minister must occur within 28 days of the election.

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to be the only nomination after the SNP came out as the biggest party following the election which took place on May 6.

Her party returned 64 MSPs while the Scottish Conservatives under Douglas Ross secured 31 seats.

Anas Sarwar's Scottish Labour Party picked up 22 MSPs with the Scottish Greens and Lib Dems on eight and four respectively.

After the nominations are submitted the Presiding Officer, Alison Johnstone, will announce the name/names of the MSPs and will ask members to vote for one candidate.

Each candidate will get to speak briefing in support of their nomination. The person who has the most votes will be the new First Minister.
