Nicola Sturgeon: The Prestwick girl who hit the top and now leads Scotland in its greatest challenge

As a raw politician, this ambitious and clever law student could never have thought that one day she would be leading the country in a time of its greatest challenge.

The lovely dark hair had not yet seen a touch of highlight, yet the smart single colour dress sense had already taken hold.

Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon was brought up in Prestwick before the family shifted to Dreghorn.

This was her, below, in 1991, a first-time SNP candidate for Shettleston and, aged just 21, the youngest trying to reach Westminster at the 1992 general election.

Of course she was royally trounced by Labour.

Nicola is also pictured by local snapper John Gunion in 1999 with her mum Joan.

She got on the SNP list for Glasgow and took her seat at Holyrood.

Changed days indeed.
