Nicola Sturgeon tests negative for covid and is no longer self-isolating

Nicola Sturgeon has received a negative covid result and will no longer have to self-isolate.

The First Minister had announced that she had been contacted by track and trace on Sunday after being in contact with someone who had tested positive for the virus.

She said she would be self-isolating while awaiting the result of a PCR test on Sunday.

In a further update on Monday morning, Ms Sturgeon confirmed that her PCR test was negative. As the First Minister is double vaccinated and had her second dose of the vaccine more than two weeks ago, she no longer needs to self-isolate.

Posting on social media, she said she will continue to do regular lateral flow tests as an added precaution.

She said: "Relieved to report that my PCR test is negative. Coupled with fact I’m double vaccinated - with second dose more than 2 weeks ago - that means I no longer need to isolate. I’ll still be doing regular LFD tests as added precaution tho - and encourage everyone else to do likewise."

Scotland is currently experiencing a 'sharp rise' in coronavirus cases with 7,113 cases recorded on Sunday including 2,211 in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

The Scottish Government cautioned that the high figures include "a larger than usual proportion of specimens that were processed more than 48 hours ago. This is due to the high volumes of tests currently being received".

Speaking at a coronavirus briefing on Friday, Nicola Sturgeon said: "Please test yourself regularly – that way, if you have the virus but don’t have symptoms, you have a chance of picking that up before going to work or out socialising and inadvertently passing it to others.

"Free lateral flow tests are available by post through the NHS inform website, or for collection from test sites and local pharmacies.

"If you test positive through one of these lateral flow devices - or if you have symptoms of the virus - make sure that you self-isolate, and book a PCR test."
