Nicola Sturgeon 'struck' by Moira Jones tribute at Queen's Park vigil for Sarah Everard

Nicola Sturgeon was 'struck' by an emotional tribute to Moira Jones as part of the Reclaim The Streets protest in memory of Sarah Everard.

Glaswegian's were invited to tie ribbons and leave notes in prominent places across the city last night after gatherings were cancelled across the UK due to covid restrictions.

A number of ribbons and bows were tied to the gates of Queen's Park in the south side, and the First Minister was touched by the note that vowed to 'fight for a better world.'

Moira was raped and murdered after being dragged into the park as she returned home from a night out in 2008.

The First Minister shared a photo of a note from the gates at the park that remembered Moira amid others shared about Sarah's story.

The note read: "For Moira Jones, who I think of every time I walk through this park. We will fight to make a better world."

Nicola Sturgeon said she was "struck" by the photo.

She added: "The park is in the heart of my constituency and I, too, think of Moira every time I walk through or around it. #ReclaimTheStreets."

The First Minister also lit a candle in her window in Sarah's memory.

The memorials aim to highlight the issue of women's safety on the streets, inviting girls to contribute to a 'manifesto' for change.

It was sparked by the disappearance of Sarah, 33, on March 3 after leaving her friend’s house in the Clapham area of London to walk home alone.

A massive police search was then sparked after it was reported that she never returned home. Her body was found in woodlands in Kent. A man has been charged with her murder.
