Nicola Sturgeon 'strongly recommends' Scots stay in own homes this Christmas

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed the Scottish Government "doesn’t intend" to take away the flexibility over coronavirus rules allowed at Christmas.

However, she has said that she "strongly recommends" that people stay in their own homes, stating they should see the relaxation of rules as "a maximum, not a target".

Following a COBRA meeting with the UK, Northern Irish and Welsh Governments last night and this morning, there are plans for guidelines to be strengthened.

Speaking at today's daily briefing, the First Minister said updated guidance will be issued later today.

Ms Sturgeon said: "The pragmatic considerations that led us to agree some limited flexibility over Christmas have not gone away.

"We recognise in some cases the isolation caused by being alone over Christmas will in itself cause harm to people's welfare and we understand that some people will simply not be prepared to leave loved ones alone over the whole Christmas period, and especially on Christmas Day."

She also said that some people will have made plans for the festive period, adding: "It is for those reasons we decided, across the four nations, to give people some clear boundaries across the Christmas period."

She said that "on balance" this was "still the right approach to take".

At Prime Minister's Questions today, Boris Johnson also confirmed that the planned relaxation of rules across the UK will go ahead, but echoed the warnings for "extreme caution".
