Nicola Sturgeon sets out new ruling on wearing face coverings at work

Face coverings will have to be worn in workplace canteens and corridors under new guidance to stem the rise of coronavirus in Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the regulations are coming in after another day of alarming deaths, hospital admissions and infection.

From Friday, anyone in a workplace canteen will have to wear a face covering when not seated at a table.

From Monday, staff will have to wear coverings in corridors.

The First Minister set out the plan in a statement to the Scottish Parliament.

She said: “The responsibility for complying with these measures rests with individuals. However, I would urge employers to take steps in their workplaces to explain and promote the new regulations.

“The new rules are a proportionate additional step, which will help employees to keep themselves and their colleagues that bit safer.”

But there was some good news for people getting married. Another change means couples will be exempt from wearing a face covering during their marriage or civil partnership.

“This is a small but important change which I hope will be welcomed by anyone about to tie the knot,” Sturgeon said.
