Nicola Sturgeon set to announce 'back to school' decision with statement in Scottish Parliament

Parents should find out this week if children will be allowed back to the classroom in February.

The current home-schooling arrangement will be reviewed by Scottish Government ministers tomorrow and a statement later issued to MSPs at Holyrood.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon promised to keep families and teachers up-to-date with the latest developments when she announced the decision not to reopen schools to the majority of pupils after the Christmas holidays.

However, it's unlikely children will return to lessons with their friends any time soon as there remains significant concerns over the high rate of covid infections across the country.

Education Minister John Swinney admitted on Friday that reopening classrooms early next month would be a "tall order".

He said: "The government will look at these questions at the cabinet on Tuesday, and the first minister will give an update to parliament on Tuesday.

"But the virus is still at a very high level in general in society, and we took the view that we had to have the level of community transmission suppressed to enable us to protect the National Health Service."

The First Minister is scheduled to make a statement in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking on BBC Good Morning Scotland last week, Mr Swinney said he accepts remote learning is a "real challenge for parents" - especially those working from home.

He added: "I think it's got off to a very good start. I thank parents, pupils, parents and families for the support that they've given to this process."
