Nicola Sturgeon sends 'love and strength' to Amy Callaghan MP after two life-saving brain operations

Nicola Sturgeon has praised East Dunbartonshire MP Amy Callaghan as she continues her recovery from a brain haemorrhage.

The 28-year-old suffered the haemorrhage related to a "previously manageable medical condition" in June.

The SNP politician took the social media on Sunday to let supporters know that she is "making good progress" and will be taking on more work after undergoing two life-saving brain surgeries.

In a statement, she explained: "Since my illness, I've been undergoing intensive rehabilitation from what was two life saving surgeries. I cannot even begin to express my love and gratitude for everyone involved - the nurses, surgeons, physios, doctors and healthcare assistants. They - our incredible NHS - have ensured I'm still here for you.

"I'm making good progress - and you'll start to hear more from me these days -  but I've still got a wee bit to go.

"Along the way I've picked up a few more scars. I've got more than my fair share of them. I used to hide them; feeling suffocated, self-conscious or defined by them.

"I'm not going to allow that any longer. It's time to embrace them: proud of my progress and fierce in my determination.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for their kind messages of love and support. It really has been a huge source of strength as I continue to come back stronger than ever."

Callaghan, who was treated for skin cancer aged 19, became MP for East Dunbartonshire at the snap election in December 2019, ousting Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson.

Amy and her team have continued to work for her constituents during the pandemic.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was among those to praise the young politician's return to work.

Posting on Twitter, she said: "Sending lots of love and strength to the amazing, courageous, formidable Amy Callaghan.

Alison Thewliss MP added: "Sending you love and hugs, wishing you all the best in your recovery."

While Chris Stephens MP replied: "Fantastic to hear you're making good progress Comrade."
