Nicola Sturgeon scraps key economic body set up by Alex Salmond

Nicola Sturgeon’s government has scrapped the key economic body set up by Alex Salmond.

The SNP administration has axed the 14-year-old Council of Economic Advisers (COEA) in favour of a new brains trust.

In its place will be a new “Advisory Council” comprising business leaders, academics and economists.

In another blow for Salmond, former Treasury permanent secretary Sir Nick MacPherson, who infuriated the former First Minister during the independence referendum, is part of the 17-member body.

Sir Nick “strongly” advised the then Tory Chancellor George Osborne against agreeing to the SNP’s plan for a currency union.
