Nicola Sturgeon schools update today in Scottish Parliament

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to outline the first steps to get kids back to school in Scotland.

She'll make a statement this afternoon giving parents an insight into plans being discussed behind the scenes.

The First Minister said she wants to get children back into the classroom "as soon as possible" after weeks of online learning.

Scotland's Cabinet will meet this morning to discuss the latest advice from experts, and decide whether or not to continue the existing home schooling arrangement beyond mid-February. Currently only the most vulnerable children and those of key workers are allowed in the classroom.

Ms Sturgeon will announce their decision in the Scottish Parliament later in the day.

The move comes more than five weeks after Scotland imposed level four lockdown across the mainland, and a fortnight after the Scottish Government opted twice to delay a return to school for most children after the Christmas holidays.

Speaking at her daily covid briefing yesterday, she said: "Tomorrow’s review will also consider schools and early years provision - and will set out our most up to date thinking on how and when we might be able to start to resume in-person learning and childcare. Obviously all of us want to do that just as soon as possible."

Ms Sturgeon also promised to explain plans for more testing in schools and nurseries, adding: "I will also provide information on some expanded arrangements for testing in those settings."
