Nicola Sturgeon school update: Christmas holidays won't be extended this year due to Covid pandemic

School Christmas holidays won't be extended this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Education Secretary John Swinney confirmed this morning that the Scottish Government has no plans to extend the festive break into January.

Nicola Sturgeon said earlier this week that there were arguments for and against changing the holiday dates and that a decision would be reached this week to give parents plenty notice.

This came after it emerged talks had taken place about changing the holiday dates amid fears festive rule relaxations could result in a rise in infections when pupils and staff return in the new year.

The Edinburgh school holidays are scheduled to take place between December 23 and January 5, and the discussions centred around shifting them so they would run from December 18 to January 11.

However Swinney told the Covid-19 committee this morning that there were no plans to do this.

He said: "I've written this morning to the education and skills committee to confirm that the government intends to make no change to the school holiday arrangements."
