Nicola Sturgeon says wearing a face covering in shops as normal as fastening a seat belt in a car

Nicola Sturgeon has said wearing a face covering in shops should be as routine as fastening a seat belt in a car as she praised Scots for the high number wearing masks since rules changed.

It's been mandatory since July 10 for adults and children over five - unless they have certain medical conditions - to cover their nose and mouth when entering any shop or using public transport in Scotland.

The First Minister said today she was pleased with the numbers who had followed the rules so far but cautioned those who were still being too "stubborn" to follow suit.

An online petition set-up two weeks ago opposing the rule change in Scotland has so far struggled to attract even 400 signatures, but several individuals remain vocal on social media in their opposition to the policy.

Asked if the Scottish Government would consider tougher penalties for those not complying with the rules, the First Minister said she would not rule anything out.

She added: "I have to say on face coverings - and I'm only speaking from my own observations and anecdotal feedback - since we moved to mandatory face coverings in shops, all of the information I have is compliance is very, very high.

"Anyone who is stubbornly refusing - as opposed to someone who may have a legitimate reason such as a health condition - I would ask them why would you refuse?

"You don't stubbornly refuse to wear a seatbelt in a car or to follow other health guidance.

"There is evidence that it does help stem the transmission, and by wearing a face covering you are helping other people. So let's keep that compliance high.

"If I have a concern, it's that people think by wearing a face covering they don't think they have to be quite so vigorous around social distancing."
