Nicola Sturgeon says vaccine will be offered to all adults by July 31

Nicola Sturgeon claimed every adult in Scotland could be offered a first covid vaccine dose by July 31, if the supplies are there.

She made the comments after the Prime Minister pledged the target would be hit by the same date.

The First Minister will tomorrow outline a new route map to gradually take the country of lockdown.

A looser set of restrictions is on the table because of the success of the vaccination programme.

Over the weekend, Johnson said the July target would allow vulnerable people to be protected "sooner" and aid a further easing on lockdown.

Asked if July 31 is also achievable for Scotland, Sturgeon said at her media briefing: “Yes, if we have the supplies, we think we can make the 31st July target to do the whole population. We are waiting on updated supply forecasts to give me certainty.”

Vaccine supply dipped recently and Sturgeon said:

“As soon as the supplies start to flow in greater volumes again, which will happen, then we increase the rate of vaccination.”

Meanwhile, Scotland’s route out of lockdown will not be identical to the UK Government’s but will be “broadly similar”, Sturgeon said.

The First Minister said the data for the nations is different but the principles of easing restrictions will be the same.

She said: “Our plans out of lockdown will not be identical. They are already not identical because we’ve got some kids back in school today which is not the case in England until into March, so we will not be identical but I think there will be broad similarities.”

She said Johnson is likely to set out a “careful and cautious” way forward, which she welcomed, adding it is “vital that we learn from past experiences”.

Sturgeon added: “Similar to us, it seems that they have prioritised children and education and getting life back to normal before doing other things.

“So I think the principles will be the same: we’re living through the same pandemic."
