Nicola Sturgeon says US election results show 'wee break in the clouds' as Joe Biden takes the lead

Nicola Sturgeon has  tweeted her hope of a "wee break in the clouds" after US presidential candidate Joe Biden pulled ahead in the race for the White House.

The First Minister took to social media after the Democrat hopeful had flipped several key states, including that of Pennsylvania, touted as crucial to any hope of winning the Oval Office.

Biden currently leads Donald Trump by 6,826 in the swing state - where 98% of the vote has been counted.

If he holds on for victory, the former Vice President will not be able to be caught by his rival.

Sturgeon hailed the news

Sturgeon tweeted: "The world can be a dark place at times just now - but today we are seeing a wee break in the clouds."

Due to the heavily Democratic leaning mail in votes making up the majority of ballots still to be counted, many US analysts believe Trump has already had his day.

Trump has repeatedly mounted desperate last ditch attempts to cling to power, making wild claims of fraud and “cheating” without any evidence.

Trump’s Republican team filed lawsuits in three states in an attempt to save his presidency against a record-breaking haul of votes for Biden across America.

Victory in Pennsylvania would add 20 electoral college votes to Biden’s total, taking him over the 270 threshold to 273.

The Democrat earlier flipped the historically red state of Georgia, where he is currently leading by 1,579, having won Wisconsin and Michigan over the last 24 hours.

Trump has to take Georgia back, having won convincingly there in 2016, if he is to have any hope of keeping the White House. If the final margin is less than half a per cent, Trump is likely to demand a recount.

Earlier, Biden used a measured tone to say “democracy is sometimes messy, it sometimes requires a little patience”.

He added that he had “no doubt” he will eventually be declared the winner.
