Nicola Sturgeon says takeaways could face restrictions amid covid spread

Nicola Sturgeon has admitted takeaways could face new restrictions in a bid to combat the spread of Covid-19.

The First Minister made the comments shortly after announcing a record 93 coronavirus deaths have been registered in Scotland since yesterday's update. Meanwhile, a further 2,309 cases have been recorded.

And as the Scottish Government explores the possibility of tightening the current lockdown restrictions even further, Nicola Sturgeon hinted the move could result in the closure of takeaway services, which are still able to trade throughout Scotland, as it stands.

She said: "I have spoken previously this week about the kind of areas that we are looking at. For example, do we need to restrict services like click and collect a bit more?

"I'm not suggesting we would stop people doing that for essential services like food, but for non-essential shopping. Do we need to restrict takeaway services a bit more, so there are fewer places staying open?"

It came after Deputy First Minister John Swinney said the extension of restrictions 'cannot be ruled out'.

He told a Holyrood committee this morning: “We cannot at this stage rule out keeping them in place longer, nor making further changes.”
