Nicola Sturgeon says significant lockdown easing "highly unlikely" tomorrow

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said it is “highly unlikely” she will tomorrow announce a significant easing of covid restrictions for any part of the country.

She said Scotland is in a “far better” position than it was, but noted there still needed to be a big decline in cases.

However, she did not rule out tougher restrictions for some areas.

The Scottish Government recently announced a five-tier system of restrictions for the country’s local authority areas.

The first weekly review will be announced in Parliament tomorrow.

At her media briefing, Sturgeon said the measures already adopted had undoubtedly had a “positive impact”.

She said: “We are in a far better position than we would have been without the current restrictions that are in place.”

However, she added that the progress had to be translated into a “significant and sustained decline in covid cases”.

She added: “I think it is, while no decisions have been taken, highly unlikely that we will see any significant easing of restrictions announced tomorrow.”

She did not rule out tighter curbs for some areas, but said she would not be announcing that the whole country would be placed in level 4.
