Nicola Sturgeon says she is considering putting travel restrictions into law

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said the Government is looking at making travel restrictions mandatory.

She said she is considering putting the current advice into regulations which are set out in law.

As part of the current set of restrictions, people living in one of the five tiers are either advised against unnecessary travel, or urged to minimise such journeys.

However, the advice, which also applies to car-sharing, is not law.

At her media briefing, Sturgeon was asked if she is considering putting the travel advice into the legal regulations designed to stop the spread of the virus: "Yes we are considering that."

She added: "We havn't taken a final decision yet, but we will say more about that at the next review point on Tuesday."

She also said: "If you want to tighten that, you cannot have the police stopping everybody's journey, but I think we all recognise that when something is put in law most people realise perhaps more than they do when it's in guidance that it's important."
