Nicola Sturgeon says Scottish Government will decide 'safe timetable' for reopening schools - not Westminster

Nicola Sturgeon insisted decisions on reopening schools must be made by the Scottish Government - not Downing Street.

The First Minister laid down the marker after claims the Prime Minister is eyeing the first day of June for schools in England to return.

Scottish schools and education are the full responsibility of Holyrood, and operate on different systems and term times.

Discussions on letting pupils back to classes are being held across the UK.

Mark Drakeford, the first minister of Wales, is also looking at some kind of phased return from around the same time as Boris Johnson.

But on social media, the Welsh government underlined schools decisions are devolved and will be made by their own minister.

Sturgeon supported the claim, responding: “Same for Scotland.”

She said the Scottish Government and councils will decide a “safe timetable for re-opening schools” and keep pupils, parents and the public “properly informed along the way”.

It was reported today that Johnson’s “roadmap” out of lockdown could see English primaries opened as soon as June 1.

In Wales, older primary school children could go back first followed by younger pupils.
