Nicola Sturgeon says Scottish Government is 'not considering' introducing a circuit breaker to halt covid cases

Nicola Sturgeon has announced that the Scottish Government is not looking to introduce a circuit breaker across the country to halt the rise in daily cases.

The First Minister attempted to calm fears after speculation a reimposing of restrictions could implemented.

It comes as cases of the virus have shot up over the last week following the lifting of the majority of restrictions across the country on August 9.

On Wednesday Scotland recorded its highest daily covid rate since the start of the devastating pandemic in March last year.

During the media briefing from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh the SNP leader also updated the country on the latest covid statistics.

In the last 24-hour period there were 6,835 people who tested positive for the deadly virus. That is the largest daily figure since the pandemic began.

There has also been a spike in hospital admissions. Last Friday there were 312 Scots in health facilities across the country, today there are 479.

Sturgeon said: "I want to be clear that some of the speculation you might be reading in the media just now is not accurate - for example, we are not currently considering a circuit breaker lockdown.

"For the moment, though, I do need to stress the vital importance of everyone playing their part in limiting the spread of the virus. The more we all do this, the more chance we have of avoiding the need to re-impose any formal restrictions."
