Nicola Sturgeon says rise in Scotland's coronavirus cases is 'a worry' but teams working hard to examine numbers

Nicola Sturgeon has described a spike in coronavirus cases over the weekend as "a worry".

However, the First Minister vowed to look into the rise in cases over the last 48 hours.

There were 123 new cases of coronavirus in Scotland registered overnight - after the 88 announced yesterday.

Sturgeon tweeted: "123 Covid cases reported today. The circumstances and any connections/patterns are being closely examined, and Test & Protect is working hard to break transmission chains.

"While the increase is of course a worry, it is important to note that the positivity rate remains below 1%."

Sturgeon yesterday said there was "no need for alarm" and the increase in cases partly reflected a greater volume of testing.

But she admitted the situation is "delicately balanced" as we head towards the winter months.

The additional cases announced today take the total number of positive cases to 20,318.

There were no new deaths meaning the total number of deaths in Scotland remains at 2,494.

The number of patients with coronavirus being treated in hospital stands at 251 - with five in intensive care.

The announcement was made online this after on the Scottish Government website.

Earlier today, Aberdeen's only major gay club, Cheerz, announced it will close over the coronavirus music ban.

Nicola Sturgeon said last week workers must not be "intimidated" into returning to offices before their safety can be assured.

And police chiefs warned rank and file officers against complacency over wearing face masks.

It was confirmed last week Scotland will remain in phase three of restrictions but announced gyms will reopen ahead of schedule as of August 31, with strict hygiene measures in place.
