Nicola Sturgeon says Humza Yousaf's 'brave' account of miscarriage 'sparks awful memories'

Nicola Sturgeon has praised Humza Yousaf and his partner Nadia El-Nakla for a 'brave account' of their miscarriage experience, despite it sparking 'awful memories' for her.

The First Minister has applauded Scotland's Justice Minister and his partner for publicly revealing they 'experienced five pregnancies, with just one of those resulting in a baby' in the past three years.

It comes after she suffered her own miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy in 2011, admitting the pain 'never leaves you'.

Now she is urging others to come forward claiming 'we don’t talk about all this enough.'

Humza shared his tragic experience after Nadia lost another baby during lockdown.

Writing on the Holyrood website he said: "It’s the most helpless I’ve ever felt, I think, ever in my life, to be honest.

"I know this is really outdated sounding, but you know, you want to be really strong for your, in my case for my wife, and I wanted to make sure that I knew what she was going to go through.

"Perhaps going into too much graphic detail here, but I mean, Nadia was having clots of blood coming away and passing out as I was trying to help her to get from the bed to the bathroom.

"You know, trying to get her to get a little bit of water to keep hydrating.

"Nobody gives you a manual for this kind of stuff."

Nadia said: "My body has been through too much and I couldn’t bear the pain of this both physically and emotionally all over again. So, enough.

“With all my miscarriages I just wanted to be at home and allow myself time to process my grief, but because this last miscarriage happened during lockdown, it was even harder for my family and friends who wanted to comfort me but couldn’t."

Nicola Sturgeon praised his brutally honest account on Twitter saying: "Brave account of miscarriage from ⁦ @HumzaYousaf ⁩ & Nadia El-Nakla.

"It’s an experience my husband & I had just once, but it never leaves you. Nadia’s account of the physical pain especially sparks awful memories.

"We don’t talk about all this enough."
