Nicola Sturgeon says 'happy day' getting first haircut of the year as Scots salons reopen

Nicola Sturgeon enjoyed her first haircut of the year as lockdown restrictions in Scotland eased, allowing hairdressers and barbers to open.

The First Minister got a fresh cut and colour at Julie McGuire’s hair salon in Edinburgh on Monday after months of closures on businesses to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Showing off her wet hair in the salon chair, the politician wore a mask as she posted a selfie on Instagram with the caption: "Happy day".

The FM joined a long list of excited customers eager to get a trim after months of being stuck at home during lockdown, with hairdressers and barbers told to shutter at Christmas.

From today, non-essential shops, including garden centres and homeware stores, were also allowed to open their doors.

Some barber shops and hairdressers opened at 6am and won't close until 8pm in a bid to see as many customers as possible due to social distancing measures in place, including masks and advance booking.

Sturgeon opted for a DIY barnet last year in the height of the first nationwide lockdown as she took a pair of scissors to her hair.

The chop came after her husband, Peter Murrell, joked on social media that he would be styling it before he was later bumped from hair cutting duty.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon was forced to clap back at claims she had been making secret trips to the hairdresser over lockdown.

The First Minister told a coronavirus committee meeting in March, broadcast on Scottish Parliament TV, that she had not been getting covert trims as she laughed at the state of her hair.

She said: "There are still conspiracy theories that circulate on social media from time to time that I’ve got a secret hairdresser somewhere.

"I can say firstly that is not true, but secondly I don’t know how anybody looking at me can reach that conclusion. No hairdresser is responsible, or would take responsibility for this."
