Nicola Sturgeon’s new coronavirus three-tier alert system will be revealed this week

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that plans for a coronavirus tiered alert system will be outlined by the end of this week.

Speaking at today's daily briefing, the First Minister said that the Scottish Government's framework will be discussed with other party leaders tomorrow before being debated in parliament next week.

She said: "As I indicated last week we will publish this week detail of our new strategic approach to tackling the virus. I hope to discuss the outlines of this tomorrow with leaders of the other parties in the Scottish Parliament.

"And we will then publish a strategic framework at the end of the week, before debating it in parliament next week.

"One of the things the framework will set out are the different tiers or levels of intervention and restrictions which may be applied in future – either locally or nationally across Scotland - depending on how the virus is spreading."

The First Minister has previously said it will look at the three-tier alert system introduced in England last Wednesday. However, it is not yet clear whether the Scottish Government will use the exact same framework.

The measures introduced in England have seen nationwide restrictions applied. In Tier 1, people can meet in a group of up to six people from multiple households either indoors or outdoors, while pubs, bars and restaurants must close at 10pm.

Under the Tier 2 restrictions, people cannot meet with anyone they do not live with indoors unless they are part of a support bubble, while the rule of six applies for socialising outside.

The most severe level of restrictions, Tier 3, means people cannot socialise with anyone outside their household in any indoor and many outdoor settings. Pubs and bars are forced to close unless they can operate as a restaurant.
