Nicola Sturgeon leaps into air in frustration as she watches Scotland Euro 2020 match

Nicola Sturgeon was caught leaping out her seat in frustration as she watched Scotland's nail-biting defeat in the opening Euro 2020 match today.

In a series of photos shared on the First Minister's official Instagram page, the visibly animated politician can be seen throwing her hands in the air during the tense game.

The SNP leader watched the action unfold on TV on Monday afternoon as the Tartan Army descended on Hampden Park for the national team's first match in a major tournament in 23 years.

Cheering on Steve Clarke's side, Sturgeon was on the edge of her seat as Scotland lost out 2-0 against Czech Republic in the tense opener.

"When you’re being secretly photographed by @nicdove27 - here’s hoping for a cheering shot in next 15 minutes!" Sturgeon wrote alongside the nine photos in sequence.

Sturgeon later tweeted it was 'onwards and upwards' after Scotland's disappointing start to the Euros.

It comes as Sturgeon shared a good luck message to the Scotland's national team ahead of their opening Euros match today.

The First Minister wasn't at Hampden but will be watched all the action on TV like millions of other Scots.

Taking to Twitter to share a video message, the SNP leader said she hoped the Tartan Army would be able to celebrate "lots and lots of goals" but also urged supporters to stay covid safe.

Sturgeon said: "After 23 long years, the big moment has finally arrived, our men's team back where they belong on the big stage.

"To Steve Clarke and the whole team, thanks for getting us here. You've done us proud already but the very, very best of luck for every kick of the ball.

"The whole country is behind you. We'll be cheering you on every step of the way.

"Every single Scotland fan has waited such a long time for this moment.

"Every fan deserves to enjoy this and I hope everyone does enjoy it. I'll be watching along with everyone else.

"But I'm the one that's got to say it, of course - we are still in the covid pandemic, so as you enjoy, we hope, lots and lots of Scotland goals, please try and do it safely, for your own sake, and for those you love.

The First Minister concluded her message with: "Come on Scotland!"
