Nicola Sturgeon's deputy urges people to stay at home for Halloween and confirms guising ban

Nicola Sturgeon's deputy John Swinney has urged people to stay at home this Halloween.

He said guising by children risked spreading coronavirus and urged people not to visit other houses.

A key restriction is a nationwide ban of socialising in people's homes.

Addressing the daily media briefing, Swinney confirmed this applied to guising.

He said in "ordinary circumstances" guising and people attending Halloween parties would be fine, but he added:

"Sadly these are not ordinary circumstances. None of us at the moment should be visiting each other's homes unless it is for an essential purpose."

He continued: "We should all be avoiding activities that make the spread of the virus more likely. I'm afraid that guising falls into that category. Going door to door, passing sweets, touching items others have touched, all of that gives the opportunity for covid to spread."

"So this Halloween our advice is that you should stay at home."
