Nicola Sturgeon reveals phase two of lockdown easing could be introduced in ten days

Nicola Sturgeon has delivered an optimistic update for the people of Scotland on when lockdown is expected to be relaxed further.

Speaking at the briefing today, the First Minister revealed phase two of lockdown easing could be introduced ten days from now, on June 18.

She said: "I am optimistic that, ten days from now at the next formal review, we will be able to move, at least in part, into the next phase of our routemap out of lockdown."

"But it depends on each and every one of us, so please, please, stick with it for now", she added.

Phase two of the four-stage route map out of lockdown will see Scots allowed to meet outside with larger groups, including family and friends with social distancing still in place.

It will also be possible to meet people from another household indoors with physical distancing and hygiene measures.

Meanwhile, small retail units could reopen with physical distancing, as well as outdoor markets.

The outdoor spaces of pubs and restaurants and playgrounds and sport courts would also be given the green light during this phase.

Professional sport could also soon be back on the TV - in line with public health advice.

Thanking the country for their sacrifices, Nicola Sturgeon cautioned that this would only go ahead the infection rates continue to remain low enough.

She explained Scotland was making significant progress but was at a crucial juncture and said the government were focused on creating a "safe foundation to lift these restrictions in the weeks to come".

The First Minister added that it "may not be every aspect" of phase two that will be relaxed immediately but equally said the government are not ruling out "accelerating things from later phases" in a bid to revive the economy and help businesses.

"It has to be done safely so the virus does not run out of control", she said.

There have been no further deaths recorded since yesterday, as with the day before - with the total remaining at 2,415.

Some 1,042 people are currently in hospital and 24 are in intensive care units with confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases in Scotland.
