NHS test and protect app launches today as Nicola Sturgeon tells Scotland 'please download it'

Scotland's new coronavirus contact tracing app has been launched.

Nicola Sturgeon shared it on Twitter first thing this morning urging Scots to do their bit to fight the virus and download it to their smartphones.

The move comes as the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases rises across the country.

And it is hoped the app will play a vital role in helping control the spread of the virus.

The First Minister tweeted: "There’s a new way to help fight Covid in Scotland. Protect Scotland - our confidential contact tracing app - will anonymously notify app users you’ve been in close contact with, should you test positive."

The app works by alerting users if they have been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive with the virus. No personal information, including a name, is shared with other users.

However, the success of the app is entirely dependant on the number of people using it.

Ms Sturgeon added: "Please download, and let’s all protect Scotland."
