Nicola Sturgeon has spoken of her “hurt” after a Tory office bearer mocked her miscarriage.
Moray Conservative Association treasurer Jane Lax was suspended from the party pending an investigation after about the First Minister were flagged up by the Record.
In one message, Lax responded to a post from a well-known Twitter troll who had suggested Sturgeon’s miscarriage was “fictional”.
Lax replied: “Is that when she dropped a book?”
The Tory then posted three laughing emojis to show she was enjoying the joke.
Sturgeon, who has no children, had a miscarriage at the age of 40 while she was deputy first minister in 2011.
The First Minister was in the early stages of pregnancy and preparing to share the news publicly.
A spokesman for the Tories described Lax’s comments as “completely unacceptable”.
Speaking to Radio Clyde yesterday, Sturgeon said it is “absolutely right” that Lax has been suspended.
She added: “These comments are hurtful – and not just to me and people close to me.
“I’ve been contacted by women who have also suffered miscarriages. These kind of comments also stir up hurtful and painful feelings in others.
“So yes, I welcome the fact she’s been suspended.
“I don’t particularly want to talk too much about what she said because I don’t want to dignify it with a response.
“I would say more generally though that anybody who finds their political disagreements with somebody leading them to make such really has to take a long, hard look at themselves and really think about what kind of person they are, and hopefully she will learn from this.”
Lax is listed on the Moray Conservative and Unionists’ website as honorary treasurer.
